Having had our plans for a trip to Southwold earlier in the month spoiled by strong winds we watched the forecast avidly in the week before.
The fleet made their way to the RNSYC in Lowestoft via Oulton Broad & Mutford Lock on Friday 21st April. We met in the club bar and talked about the following day’s weather and passage plan. We had several crews who had not been to sea before so we shared some knowledge then enjoyed an excellent meal.
With high water Southwold predicted at 1200hrs we had a leisurely start on Saturday morning for the short run. Whilst the sea was not flat calm after several days of strong winds, it was a very pleasant passage. We were all safely tied up in the Harbour by midday and had a relaxed afternoon. We all met aboard ‘Diva’ at 1600hrs for drinks before going across to the Harbour Inn for dinner.
With the wind changing direction on Monday from southerly to northerly, we took the decision to go back to Lowestoft on Sunday, departing at 1200hrs. It was southerly F4-5 and was throwing up a reasonable swell. Once the boats had cleared the Harbour and shallow water, the ride was comfortable but not what you would call flat calm. Many really enjoyed the ride, some not so much. No one was sea sick however and everyone made it safely back to the RNSYC to enjoy some well deserved Roast beef and sociable afternoon.
